About the Sunflowers
Vincent van Gogh painted his famous Sunflowers in Arles, in the south of France. In 1888 and 1889, he created five large paintings with sunflowers, using only three shades of yellow – “and nothing else”. For Vincent, sunflowers symbolised gratitude. Paul Gauguin, Vincent’s close friend, hung two of these sunflower paintings in his room and felt they were “typically Vincent”. The work became an iconic image of their time together in the Yellow House.
